Seatoun – A new private residence

Thinking back to residential projects, I worked at a high-end residential practice, John Mills Architects after graduation for the first four years of my career. What a fantastic way to gain a breadth of experience in all parts of the building process in architecture, landscape and interiors. I feel that each project leaves an imprint in my memory and provides valuable lessons in the profession but also in life in general. This was one of the first new homes that I was able to take a lead role on and work with the clients together with John to bring to life their dream. Coming from legal backgrounds, the clients were particular in how they wanted things and in as much as it may be a headache for some, it was perfect for me, a keen young designer, eager to get things just right for them.

Each site is so unique and brings with it both constraints and opportunities and the challenge is to bring these together with the client brief to develop a wonderful outcome. Here the usual Wellington wind, was coupled with close proximity to the beach and its relentless salt spray, soft soils and all-day beating sunshine. Views to the ocean over and between neighbouring residences were captured with carefully placed windows to make the most of this spectacular location. Signature colours, textures were complimented by a stunning custom kitchen joinery by artist John Calvert and made this home feel truly special. My favourite element was a testament to my love of architecture within structure and the floating staircase in the entrance, which gave the engineer and myself a little challenge to get it to work.
