Some of you know of my German heritage, my parents both emigrated from Germany before I was born and as such, I learnt the language at home, actually before I spoke a word of English! Of course, I totally took it for granted, wanted only to fit in with my peers by switching to English as soon as possible and then didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to 2016 and the birth of my own daughter, suddenly that piece of my heritage felt important. And so, the mission to bring her up speaking German began. I met a wonderful group of women, all immigrants like my own parents, who hoped to instil a sense of German heritage in their children.
Not satisfied with the opportunities available beyond playgroup and a language school group, we embarked on a journey that formalised into a collective called the ‘German Culture Club.’ The mission: to bring the German community together for cultural events, camps, choir, meet-ups, so that our children could feel the German culture alive around them here in Wellington. The German women are excellent organisers, and before long, the work to bring events to life was paying off and more people were joining in. Where event planning may not be my primary area of comfort, there are other things I am more skilled in and have enjoyed contributing towards:
